Laboratory Control Ltd. Health Career Scholarship Recipients Announced
The Legacy Foundation is pleased to announce the recipients of the Laboratory Control Ltd. Health Career Scholarship for the 2021-2022 school year. Since 2004, 172 students in health care programs of study have received $454,125 in scholarship support. To date, scholarships have been awarded to students from 39 different communities in southeast Iowa. The scholarship program invests in the education of students that may look to southeast Iowa for employment in health care following the completion of their studies.
Each scholarship application is individually evaluated and scored by a committee of area professionals through a blind review process. The anonymous applicants are scored based on their academic record, achievement, and area of study. Additionally, preference is given to applicants who express a desire to seek employment in southeast Iowa upon completion of their studies and/or are pursuing education in a health career field identified as a local workforce shortage area.
The external scholarship review committee awarded $31,800 in scholarships to 17 local students, including the one-time, $5,000 scholarship in honor of retiring board member, Phil Noel. According to Amy Nossaman, Grants Program Manager at the Legacy Foundation, “the scholarship was designed back in 2004 to support local students in the hope that they will want to return to the area when they are ready to enter the healthcare workforce. It’s working” said Nossaman. 36% of past scholars have returned to the area to work, while 26% are still in school.
