It was a night of celebration with a call to action at the Ottumwa Leadership Academy graduation ceremony for the 2013-2014 class held on June 12th. Graduates of the 10 month long program also had the opportunity to present their team class projects to the over 100 individuals in attendance. Class projects varied in their subject matter and included a “Buy Local” campaign, a plan to decrease the teen pregnancy rates within Wapello County, a comprehensive program to implement neighborhood associations and the announcement of an enhanced Ottumwa High School Silver Cord program which included scholarship opportunities for the participants. An inspirational message was given by keynote speaker IHCC President Dr. Marlene Sprouse who reminded the group that their work was not complete simply because they had graduated the program but in reality was just beginning as she charged them with getting involved with their community in areas they are passionate about. This message was affirmed throughout the program by Class Dean Dr. Ted Haas who continually reminded graduates of the skills and knowledge they had learned throughout the year and referenced the Academy tagline of “Educate – Empower – Encourage – Engage”, saying “We’ve helped you with the first part – now the rest is up to you.”
